Sousa lost to Croatia’s Marin Cilic, by 6-1, 7-5 e 6-2, in a match that lasted one hour and 47 minutes.

Cilic is ranked six in the world and Sousa 70.

The match was the fourth between the two men; Cilic had previously beaten the Portuguese in the Madrid Masters1000 (in 2014), in Cincinnati (in 2015) and in Beijing (in 2014).

Sousa’s had in the past reached the third round in Melbourne, in 2015 and 2016.
