The Portuguese government has appealed to the country’s emigrants to take “extra care” on their journeys back to Portugal over the festive season, particularly if travelling by car.

State Secretary Portuguese Communities, José Luís Carneiro, said the Christmas season is a time for families to be reunited, but for travellers to remember to take care on the roads, especially if driving over hundreds or even thousands of kilometres. He recalled there are 5.7 million Portuguese or their children living abroad, some 2.3 million of whom live in Europe. Mr Carneiro also said that next year the government would continue to invest in consular services, particularly in the protection and emergency areas.
