The World Health Organisation (WHO) issued a warning at the beginning of the month about an outbreak of plague on the island that has already caused at least 45 deaths. The Portuguese health department is also advising travellers heading to the Lazio region of central Italy to see a doctor because of an outbreak of Chikungunya, a disease that is spread by mosquitoes. Cases have also been found in the Calabria region, in the ‘toe’ of southern Italy.
