Portuguese throw away 200,000 tons of clothing per year

Portugal throws away around 200,000 tons of clothing a year, meaning never before has the country purchased so much clothing to wear for such a short time.

According to online news site Diário de Notícias, even through many garments can nowadays be reused and recycled, a large part of discarded clothing still ends up in landfills.

This, the newspaper claims, is increasing the textile industry’s impact on the environment, which is already one of the most pollutive industries in the world.
