Dedicated to tourism in Europe, in partnership with the European Commission for the promotion of sustainable tourism (EDEN Network) and more than 300 European tourism offices, European Best Destinations has been organising the Best Beaches in Europe competition for over a decade.
This year 12,840 travellers from 129 countries voted for their favourite European beaches in Europe, and Praia de Carvoeiro emerged in the top spot, as the Best Beach in Europe.
Nine other Portuguese beaches, four of which are in the Algarve, also featured on the list, though it was the small Algarve village that reigned supreme, beating off stiff competition from stunning beaches in countries such as Greece, Croatia, Spain, France and Italy.
The organisers of the poll said Carvoeiro “is probably one of the most beautiful places we have seen during our travels in Europe.”
“The sea is beautiful, the water is neither too hot nor too cold, the waves can be strong or on the contrary gentle enough for paddling and discovering the coves around it”, they effused.
