South African expat Debbie Franck is among the organsiers, and said the protest was also aimed at raising awareness of “the horror and turmoil that beautiful country is currently experiencing.”

This protest follows one which was staged on Monday in South Africa during which thousands of South Africans rallied around the farming community in nationwide protests against farm murders.

According to South Africa news site News24, the #BlackMonday campaign raised several questions about the legitimacy of farmers’ concerns, the overall issue of crime in South Africa and whether farm murders are racially motivated.

Referring to the protests, the BBC argued they were “causing racial divisions” after some demonstrators were seen carrying the flag from the apartheid era, when South Africa was governed by its white minority and black people were not allowed to vote.

The protest was staged three days after two white farmers were sentenced to more than 10 years in prison each for forcing a black man into a coffin.

Latest crime statistics out this week in South Africa show that the murder rate has risen the past 12 months to 52 murders a day, up from 51 the previous year.
