Recent heavy rains 'not enough' - Environment minister

Portugal’s environment minister, João Matos Fernandes, warned that despite the heavy rains of the past few weeks, the hydrographic basins south of the Tagus have less water than normal for the time of year, he said on Friday following a visit to the Pego do Altar reservoir near Alcácer do Sal.

The river Sado hydrographic basin proves the situation. It was at 20% capacity before the recent rains and is now at 40%, but we would expect it to be at 50% by this time, he said.

There are other reservoirs he said, that are important for public consumption that are still far from having the amount of water that would allow us to say that this would be a calm year, João Matos Fernandes added.
