Reconstruction of homes delayed until 2019 due to legal problems

The mayor of Monchique, in Portugal's southern tourist Algarve region, said on Monday that the reconstruction of homes destroyed by the wildfires in August would only be concluded in 2019 due to legal problems.

“At the present time, we have some home ownership questions as some of them are not legalised and there are also some landlords who don’t want to rebuild the homes because want the tenant, the injured party, to leave,” Rui André said.

He said negotiations were underway between owners and tenants to find a solution and be able to rebuild the homes affected.

Mr André added that the Revita fund aimed at supporting those affected by the fires was “adequate for now, but only when things on the ground are carried out can we measure its efficiency.”

The wildfires in the hills of Monchique broke out on 3 August and were finally extinguished on 10 August. They injured 41 people and burned around 27,635 hectares of land.
