The past year saw many highs and some lows, most notably the June and October wildfires. These events, which claimed the lives of over one hundred people, will forever be etched in the collective memories of the country’s population.

Review of 2017

But there were however many positives too that found abundant space on the pages of The Portugal News.
The growing economy was a regular news feature, with jobless rates falling and consumer confidence reaching unprecedented highs.
Tourism figures once again broke all records, with last week’s announcement that Portugal is the world’s best travel destination, testimony to the country’s apparent boundless popularity beyond our borders.
Portugal was also voted the third most peaceful country in the world. This is coupled with political, social and economic stability, and yet it somehow still remains one of the best kept secrets as a destination.
2017 marked the 40th anniversary of The Portugal News, which continues on its path of serving a growing readership, with social media and our website showing exceptional growth.
Visits to www.theportugalnews.com continued to grow in 2017, while our Facebook page now boasts more than 43,000 followers, with the perfectly attainable target for 2018 being that this number surpasses the 50,000 mark.
The newspaper has seen much change since the early post-revolution days of 1977 when it was founded, and in the past year it has continued to lay claim being one of the country’s most-read, most-trusted and most-recognisable news titles.
The coming pages take a brief look at some of the news highlights of 2017 as we enter the festive season.
Enjoy the (re)-read and wishing you a healthy year ahead in one of the world’s best places to live, grow-up, work and retire.
