Same-sex adoption referendum sent to constitutional court

Portugal’s president sent a proposal, to hold a referendum on adoption and co-adoption of children by same-sex couples, approved in parliament on 17 January by the main centre-right PSD party, to the country’s constitutional court.

The constitutional court judges now have 25 days to come to a decision on the constitutionality of the proposal, which was seen by many as an opt-out by the government in requesting a referendum instead of taking a political decision.

Even the minor coalition party, the CDS-PP was against the idea of a referendum, which they said would be a waste of money.
