The Owls won the game against the Eagles through a solitary goal scored by their playmaker Fernando Forestieri.

Benfica, who had beaten Derby County 4-0 over the weekend, were subjected to several changes, but failed to unlock the Wednesday defence.

Sheffield Wednesday fielded two of their Portuguese players, with Portuguese international Lucas João and Marco Matias taking the field.

Sheffield Wednesday, who are managed by Carlos Carvalhal, now head for Portugal where they will face Nacional de Madeira in Albufeira.

This will be followed by a match against Portimonese on Monday afternoon at 6pm.

Portimonense, like their opponents from South Yorkshire, narrowly missed out on promotion last season, losing out to Feirense on goal difference.

In comments to the Sheffield Wednesday official website, the Owls' Portuguese manager Carlos Carvalhal expressed his satisfaction at beating "one of the best teams in Europe" and who have an estimated six million supporters in Portugal alone.

However, he added that the team will not be over-celebrating the victory.

“If you tell me we will beat Aston Villa in the first game, then we will take more confidence from that.

“Tonight was a friendly and a good chance to see where we are at and what we can do.

“A lot of people support Benfica, they are an international team.

“It is good for the club that a lot of people will now know Sheffield Wednesday because of this game."
