After "several months of work by the Sport TV team, especially the team for news programmes (...) in the UEFA competition to acquire the rights to broadcast Euro 2020, Sport TV today announces that we have acquired the full rights to Euro 2020," Pires said. "Sport TV will be the official television [station] of Euro 2020 and has acquired all broadcasting rights, including the open signal and closed signal, and it is the first time in the history of Sport TV" that the company "has acquired all right” to the finals of football’s European Championship.

Questrioned by Lusa News Agency about why Sport TV wanted to secure the open-signal rights, Pires explained that the aim was to ensure that Portuguese viewers could see all the national team’s matches.

"Obviously [Sport TV] was going to guarantee the broadcast rights that it has always had and which it has renewed" - namely, the "promise to the Portuguese that in national content where the national team is playing and, in particular, in a competition of this magnitude with global impact, Sport TV was in the running to acquire what it has always acquired," Pires said.

"In this particular case, UEFA understood that it was essential to have a second round" of bidding with regard to the open signal, since the bidding channels "were not able to meet the requirements of UEFA, so Sport TV took the view that it had to take an additional step, "he said.
