The start of the day's session is schedule for 3pm, and it is expected to run for some four hours.

One further parliamentary session has been scheduled, for 22 and 23 July, to vote on outstanding legislation.

The last State of the Nation debate was on 2 July 2014; the prime minister opened it by calling for a national commitment on employment and asked António José Seguro, then leader of the opposition Socialists, his position in regard to the European Union budget treaty.

This time, Passos Coelho has said, he intends to take to the debate a message of confidence in the euro zone and the Portuguese economy.

The current Socialist leader, António Costa, is expected to portray himself as giving voice to citizens disillusioned with "false promises" in the 2011 general election campaign, when the prime minister "guaranteed that he would not cut salaries, pensions and would not increase taxes."
