Taxman takes in €44.3 billion in 2018

Portugal collected 44.3 billion euros in taxes in 2018, an increase of 4.9 percent (2.08 billion euros) when compared to 2017, according to the summary of the budget implementation released late last week by the National Agency for the State Budget (DGO).

The 4.9 percent increase in tax revenue surpassed expenditure growth (4.5 percent), mainly because of direct taxes, which registered a year-on-year increase of 7.7 percent at the end of 2018.

According to the DGO, tax revenue registered an increase of 2.08 billion euros, totalling exactly 44.3 billion euros between January and December 2018.

Among indirect tax, corporate income tax saw a year-on-year increase in December of 10.2 percent of 587.5 million euros, for a total of 6.34 billion euros.
