Ride-finding platform Uber has asked the Portuguese independent transport regulator for permission to operate in Portugal, the day a new law covering these electronic platforms came into force.

Uber currently has more than 6,500 drivers in the country and has operated in 18 areas in and around Lisbon and Porto and in the Algarve since 2014.

A new law came into force on 1 November that governs electronic transport platforms such as Uber or Cabify, after many months of parliamentary discussions and protests by taxi drivers.
