Unemployment drops slightly

Unemployment in Portugal backed down slightly in May 17.6%, 0.2 percentage points (pp) lower than in April but still higher than the 15.5% seen 12 months earlier, Eurostat said.

The European statistics office said that despite the slight fall, the jobless rate in Portugal is still the third highest after Spain (26.9%) and Greece (26.8% - March data).

The average unemployment rate in the Eurozone was 12.1%, up on the 12% seen in April.

Youth unemployment in Portugal mirrored unemployment in general. The proportion of people aged under 25 out of work was 42.1% in May again 0.2 pp lower than in April but still higher than in May 2012 when it stood at 37,6%.

Eurostat estimated there were 932,000 jobless individuals in Portugal, 171,000 of whom were under 25.

Eurostat calculates unemployment the same way in all countries to make the figures comparable, but the numbers may not be the same at those issued by the Portuguese National Statistics Institute (INE).
