The funeral of a Portuguese woman resident in the USA and who was murdered last week in the Dominican Republic was held on Thursday in Estarreja after he body was flown back to Portugal.
A family member told Lusa News Agency that 37-year-old Sandra Valente’s body arrived in Portugal on Tuesday ahead of her funeral today (Thursday 24 January) in her hometown.
Ms. Valente resided in New Jersey and had been holidaying in the Dominican Republic with her boyfriend, Ramon Figuereuo, 41, staying in a hotel in Santo Domingo.
On the night of 14 January the couple had dined out at a restaurant in the vicinity of the hotel and were walking back to their car when an armed assailant tried to rip a gold chain from Sandra.
When she resisted the man shot her twice with a 38 caliber gun, hitting her in her head and her arm.
Ms. Valente died later than night in the Dario Contreras Hospital in the Dominican capital.
The couple has a 13-year-old daughter.
Ms. Valente’s parents were the owners of a Portuguese restaurant in North Newark for more than 30 years.
In 2006, after her father passed away, her mother closed the eatery and returned to Portugal while Sandra and her sister Mattie stayed in the USA.
