A letter from the department to the slaughterhouses stresses the difficulties “especially of sanitary inspectors” because of “workers on sick leave” making it “impossible to keep six inspectors on duty after 12 October” who conduct the sanitary inspections in the Trás-os-Montes region of the country.
The lack of inspectors and inspections means animals cannot be slaughtered and the companies cannot operate, with consequences for producers and the livestock industry, which are important in this part of Portugal. TPN/Lusa
