Large medieval Islamic necropolis discovered under Beja high school

in News · 19-02-2011 00:00:00 · 0 Comments

Archaeologists have unearthed one of the biggest necropolises yet discovered from Portugal’s medieval Islamic period in the southern city of Beja.

Project coordinator Raquel Santos told Lusa News Agency that the remains of some 250 people, mostly buried on their sides in Islamic fashion, have been found.
The discovery, Santos added, was made during preparations to renovate one of Beja’s high schools.
Islamic rulers governed most of what today is Portugal, from the early 8th century through the mid-13th century until being pushed out to North Africa in the so-called ‘Re-conquest’ by Christian forces.
