Portugal backs US military in West Africa drug wars

Portugal backs the idea of the United States using its military Africa Command (AFRICOM) in fighting drug-trafficking in the former Portuguese colony of Guinea-Bissau and other West African countries.

President Ramos-Horta highlighted the importance of the militarised police force in helping train Timor’s law enforcement officers.
“It takes more than two or three years to train a police officer” so “bilateral cooperation may go on for many more years” Nobel Peace Prize winner Ramos-Horta told journalists.
Discussions between Portugal and East-Timor are under way and Ramos-Horta agrees that “it will obviously have to be paid for by the Timorese, as the country cannot always expect Portugal to pick up the bill.
