PM promotes exports at Milan furniture fair

in News · 23-04-2011 00:00:00 · 0 Comments

Caretaker Prime Minister José Sócrates travelled to Italy last week to promote Portugal’s furniture sector at a leading Milan trade fair.

The trip took place as Lisbon negotiates a bailout programme with Brussels and the IMF for its crippled finances and frail economy, in which the forestry-related sector is a rare bright spot. The prime minister was accompanied by Economy Minister José Vieira da Silva to the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition, where some 30 Portuguese companies are represented. Despite facing a double-dip recession, Portuguese exports are growing with forestry-related sectors representing about 10.3% of the total. Figures show exports from the pulp-paper and wood furniture sectors grew 36% and 10%, respectively, last year.
