Portuguese pop star dies after horrific car crash

Angélico Vieira, who shot to fame after appearing on the popular teen soap Morangos com Açucar, as well as being part of boy band D’Zrt, was left seriously injured following the crash, which occurred during the early hours of Saturday morning.
His death was officially confirmed by a hospital spokesperson at around 11.45pm Tuesday evening, following days of speculation regarding his condition.
The 28-year-old star, full name Sandro Milton Vieira Angélico, was admitted to Oporto’s Santo António Hospital’s intensive care unit following the accident. Medical sources initially said his prognosis was “very reserved.” He is said to have suffered “very serious” brain damage.Despite having undergone extensive surgery immediately after the accident, the actor was kept alive on a life support machine, which was switched off after it was confirmed he was brain dead.
In the hours leading up to his death his condition is said to have worsened.
It was also suggested that Mr. Vieria was at the wheel of the BMW when a tyre blew, causing the horrific smash.
A police source was quoted as saying it was the front left wheel that burst. It has also been reported that a police source suggested only one of the car’s four occupants was wearing a seat belt. Of the three other people involved in the incident, one was killed, another suffered less-serious injuries, and a 17-year-old girl has also been left seriously injured and is being treated in the same intensive care unit as Mr. Vieira was.
The incident occurred at around 3.15am on Saturday morning on the A1 motorway, Oporto-Lisbon direction, near the kilometre 258 marker and Estarreja exit.
Angélico Vieira was on his way to Lisbon to launch a new solo album when tragedy struck.
He shot to fame after being picked to play ‘David’, in teen soap Morangos com Açucar. At the same time boy-band D’Zrt was formed, which went on to become a national phenomenon.
On Monday night hundreds of well-wishers and fans gathered outside the hospital to hold a vigil for the popular performer, who has also modelled and is equally well-known for his once shoulder-length hair as well as being an ex-boyfriend of the also popular soap actress Rita Pereira. Angélico’s father flew in from Angola to be at his bedside. He is said to have been so distressed by his son’s condition that he himself required medical attention.
