Timorese resistance leader awarded honorary doctorate

Xanana Gusmão, former president and current prime minister of East Timor was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Coimbra.

Coimbra University Professor, José Augusto Cardoso Bernardes highlighted a range of reasons for the honour including: Gusmão’s role in ensuring Portuguese became an official language of East Timor, his contribution towards the struggle for independence from Indonesia, his political role since, as well as his emotional bond with Portugal.
