The Inditex group, which owns Zara and Massimo Dutti and is the world leader in retail clothing, buys €1.5 billion worth from Portuguese suppliers every year and it considers Portugal to be “absolutely essential” for its business.

The group has 171 suppliers in Portugal with 887 factories and more than 46,000 workers, though they do not all necessarily work only for Inditex, according to figures from the end of 2015. Pablo Isla, the CEO of the world’s largest retail clothes group recalled that Inditex’s first store outsider of Spain was in Rua de Santa Catarina in Porto, which opened in 1988, and it is “still operating”.
