The train had just left Portimão station and was heading west to Lagos.
Richard Marques, commander of the Portimão fire brigade, told the media that the driver gave indication that “the young man was on the track, talking on the phone” and had not noticed the train approaching.
In September 2016, a 20-year-old girl was also hit and killed by a train at the same spot.
Newspaper Correio da Manhã states that the place where the accidents occurred is located next to houses and has poor visibility for those who cross as well as no fencing to stop people crossing.
