The athlete, who was born in 1983, in Santo Tirso and suffered an accident at two years old which left him unable to walk. In 1991, he started playing sports, becoming the first Portuguese athlete to win an international medal, in wheelchair athletics.

With a 20-year career and more than 68 appearances in national and international competitions, João Correia is the first Portuguese athlete to win an international medal in wheelchair athletics.
