While the season is still yet to finish, the win over Boavista means that the Lions have 82 points and with only two games left to play, second place Porto are unable to make up the eight point deficit.

Sporting coach Ruben Amorim spoke of his pride in the team as they ended 19 years of championship losses.

“This championship is for everyone, but mainly for the players, who have been the main drivers of this achievement. I am very proud of the players and say thank you to all of them,” said the Lions coach in statements after the 1-0 victory against Boavista on 11 May.

The coach, who arrived at the Alvalade last season, recalled the criticisms that were targeted at the team when they were eliminated from the Europa League, early in the season, and praised the character of the players who were able to overcome the difficult times.

“We were criticised a lot, but we took advantage of that to work harder. We are a big family and I think this championship was tailor-made for this group. We listened to the criticisms, we did not hide from them and because of this I have immense pride in the character of this team”, said Rúben Amorim.

While Sporting fans across the country celebrated the historic win, unrest in the Marquês de Pombal square in Lisbon were deemed as a “stain” on the green and white party as some supporters threw objects at police and journalists and broke down barriers leading to the security forces firing rubber bullets and using batons to break up the crowds.

Fans had previously been warned not to gather in groups due to the pandemic and social distancing measures that are still in place across the country but still thousands came out in support with the celebrations in the centre of Lisbon bubbling over into unrest and some supporters suffering injuries.

However, the evening was mainly a joyous one for fans with praise being given to the team from the Prime Minister, President and from old boy Cristiano Ronaldo, who took to Instagram to congratulate the team where he first began his career: “May congratulations champions” he wrote.
