After two years of growth, the number of Portuguese who emigrated to Luxembourg dropped in 2020.

According to the article ‘Emigration to Luxembourg interrupts growth and decreases in 2020’, by Inês Vidigal, published in the Emigration Observatory, during that period there were 22,490 foreigners who entered Luxembourg.

Data from the Luxembourg Department of Statistics, cited in the article, show that this decline in the entry of Portuguese people into Luxembourg territory occurs after two years of growth.

A decrease of -12.4 percent which, even so, was less than the decrease in the total number of entries in the country: -15.7 percent.

Between 2000 and 2020, Portuguese entries into Luxembourg territory reached a minimum in 2000 (2,193) and a maximum in 2012 (5,193 entries).

The article states that the loss of the relative importance of Portuguese immigration in Luxembourg has been accentuated, indicating that, between 2003 and 2020, the inflows of Portuguese people in that country went from more than 29 percent of the total inflows of foreign migrants to 14 percent.

Portuguese represent 14.9 percent of the population of Luxembourg, according to the Emigration Observatory.
