I enjoyed reading this book when I come across a copy a few years ago so I was pleased when a special anniversary edition, with new chapters, was recently released.

If you are not familiar with the story, the author Chris and his wife Ana move to a mountain farm in Las Alpujarras, a little known region in the south of Spain.

Chris Stewart, the ex Genesis drummer, wrote the book so he could buy a second hand tractor. It ended up selling more than a million copies and he has gone on to write other books about his adventures.

We soon learn that the old owner has no intention of leaving. We meet the neighbours, other travelers and farmers. After the move Ana gives birth to their daughter Chloe and this links them forever to this farm.

We also discover the farm is on the wrong side of the river, has no access road or water supply but full of olive, almond and lemon groves. So we get to enjoy all their trials and tribulations they face as a result.

This includes renovating the old stone house, learning local customs growing vegetables, breeding lambs, raising a child and trying to fit in as a local. Lifestyle in this part of the world is unhurried, simple yet satisfying, and you can’t help but applaud the people who take the jump and make such a move.

It’s a great read and the story is filled with humour and realism and the new chapters are great. If you have not read the book then you are in for a treat.
