According to a report by Público, between 2018 and 2019, 257 people had to go to the orthopedic emergency department at Hospital de São José, in Lisbon, following accidents with electric scooters and doctors believe that this year the numbers ​​will be even higher.

The data is the result of a survey carried out by orthopedists at the Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Lisboa Central (CHULC), between October 2018 and the same month of 2019 that was published in this month's edition of Acta Médica Portuguesa and published by the Público.

As indicated, of the 257 cases, 65 had fractures, of which 35 required surgery.

According to the study - which includes accidents involving drivers, passengers, and pedestrians being run over - most injuries occur in the waist and ankle area, with the latter being the area that most needed screws or plates for treatment.

Speaking to Público newspaper, the doctor and author of the study Marino Machado warns that this year could be worse.

The doctor explains that the investigation intends to alert people to the dangers inherent in the unregulated use of scooters and to call for greater legislation regarding riding them.
