He was known for
doing good. He would find out who was in need and, during the night, he would
secretly visit the family and deposit gifts of money and food.
Often, he would get
up on the roof and drop the gifts down the chimney. He was especially kind to
needy children. This aspect of St Nicholas’ life is the basis of Santa
Claus/Father Christmas
The spirit of kind
and loving giving that characterised St Nicholas’ ministry, as a compassionate
bishop, is honoured in the Christmas traditions of Santa Claus and the giving
of presents - especially to children.
His feast day is
celebrated on December 6th
