Celebrating World Portuguese language Day

The World Day of the Portuguese Language, which is celebrated on 5 May, will be celebrated in 44 countries with more than 150 activities.

With a programme that includes conferences, concerts, literary and poetry contests and academic initiatives, the second World Portuguese language Day will take place in a mixed face-to-face and online format.

In Lisbon, an official session will be held on 5 May.

The programme for the celebrations of World Portuguese Language Day was presented on 26 April, in Lisbon, at a joint press conference by the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Augusto Santos Silva.

The commemoration programme of this anniversary has initiatives promoted by the areas of Foreign Affairs, Culture, Science, Technology and Higher Education and Education, in Portugal.

During the press conference, Augusto Santos Silva, explained that the celebrations cover the dimensions of research, geography, translation into other languages, the connection to other arts and the mobilisation of populations, the one he considered the “most important”.

In this context, he highlighted the holding, in Angola, of the contest #escreveumpoemacamoes, which challenges people to write a poem in Portuguese, then sharing it on social networks, and of a literary contest, in Mozambique, which challenges students to write stories about the pandemic.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) proclaimed, in 5 May, 2019 as World Day for the Portuguese Language, following the proposal of all Portuguese-speaking countries, supported by 24 more states, including countries like Argentina, Chile, Georgia, Luxembourg or Uruguay.
