The former Chelsea manager has made a dramatic career change, turning away from football and moving instead into the world of rally driving.

Andre Villas-Boas is to make his World Rally Championship debut at home in Portugal, driving a Citroën C3 in the third tier of the championship, WRC3.

The 43 year, who left Marseille in March, has previously taken part in motorsports after competing in the Dakar Rally in 2018, which he eventually crashed out of.

The 54th edition of the Rally of Portugal is to take place in the country between 20 and 23 May.

Villas-Boas will be joined in the WRC by other motorsport stars including Frenchman Sébastien Ogier (Toyota Yaris).

Ogier, who arrives in Portugal at the top of the championship, with two victories, the last of which was in the previous round in Croatia, is set to be challenged by Belgian Thierry Neuville in the Hyundai i20, Elfyn Evans in the Toyota Yaris.

In 2020, the Rally of Portugal was cancelled due to the uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The 2021 Rally of Portugal will have 21 timed stages, including a super-special stage in the area of Foz do Douro, in Porto, to be held in the late afternoon of Saturday, May 22.

The drivers face a total of 346.26 kilometres to be covered over the three days of the race.

In 2019, the last time the rally took place in Portugal, the Estonian Ott Tanak, in a Toyota Yaris, won the 53rd edition of the Rally of Portugal.
