According to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), there are 254 Portuguese municipalities where it is possible to buy a house for less than the national median, of 1,446 euros/m2, a value calculated from of homes sold in the country between October 2021 and September 2022. This means that in most municipalities in the country, it is possible to buy a house of 100 square meters for less than €145,000, according to a report by idealista.
It is in the interior of the country where the houses for sale at more affordable prices are found. Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, in the district of Guarda, is the municipality that has the lowest median house prices in the whole country, costing just 171 euros/m2 in the last 12 months ending in the third quarter of 2022. In other words, a house of 100 m2 in this municipality can cost around €17,000.
“During the period under review, 46 municipalities had a median price higher than the national value, located mostly in the sub-regions of the Algarve (14 out of 16 municipalities) and the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (16 out of 18)”. It is Lisbon (3,785 euros/m2 ), Cascais (3,371 euros/m2), and Oeiras (2,929 euros) have the highest house prices to buy in the entire country.
