The operation carried out in Albufeira, one of the most touristic areas of the Algarve, extended over three months, in which there were mixed patrols, with soldiers from the Guardia Civil of Spain, the French Gendamarie Nationale and the Carabinieri of Italy.

During the period, more than 1,600 drivers were inspected in Albufeira, 96 had been drinking, of which 44 were arrested for having blood alcohol levels equal to or higher than 1.2 grams per litre.

914 road traffic offences were detected, mostly for misuse of mobile phones while driving (77), but also for lack of mandatory periodic inspection (36), 74 were arrested for driving without a licence.

With regard to drug trafficking and use, 107 people were identified and 41 arrested, with the authorities seizing a total of 1,341 doses of drugs, mostly hashish (718) and cocaine (558).

During the three months, 109 offences related to economic activities and operation of commercial establishments were detected, namely 42 for itinerant sales and 38 for operating beyond permitted closing times.

There were also 10 offences related to the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages, 16 for excess noise, eight for the use of blunt instruments and one to the sale of alcoholic beverages after 00:00.

The presence of European police officers served to "promote and facilitate proximity policing with tourists, in an environment of international cooperation", concludes the GNR.
