After attempting to spend one of the notes, a shopkeeper approached the defendant and demanded that the counterfeit note be exchanged for a genuine one, and immediately advised the nearby police. Knowing the characteristics of the individual, the police followed the man and then later arrested him.

The suspect had 39 counterfeit 50 euro notes in his possession, making a total of 1 950 euro, and in a purse, 7,050 euro in cash from the European Central Bank in 20, 50 and 100 euro banknotes.
