"Suspension of tolls in ex-Scut will not solve tourism problems”

The Minister of Territorial Cohesion said that the suspension of payment of tolls in ex-Scut will not solve the sector’s problems, during a time when people "should stay at home".

"I think that the idea is legitimate. I think that at the moment where our [State] Budget is so under and in so much need, we have done what was possible, which is a 25 percent reduction from the eighth day of use, in the certainty that we will continue to make an effort to reduce these costs," Ana Abrunhosa told Lusa.

The president of Turismo do Centro de Portugal, Pedro Machado, urged the Government to suspend the payment of tolls on ex-Scut (ex-roads without costs for the user) in the next six months, "since it is limiting circulation” due to Covid-19. In Viseu, during the presentation of the Route Dão e Petiscos, Pedro Machado recalled that "tourism was responsible for 14.9 percent of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) in 2019" and argued that a sector that "injected money into the economy, which is of such a significant value, needs aid to be strengthened".
