All we want for Christmas is music

The arrival of the Christmas season is announced by songs alluding to the season that can be heard everywhere.

Starting in December (or sometimes even earlier), musical hits like “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree” and “Jingle Bells”, will echo everywhere, marking the beginning of the most magical time of the year.

Every year several artists try their luck to record a Christmas album, sometimes with an original single, in an attempt to turn it into a Christmas classic, like “Last Christmas” by Wham!. On streaming platforms like Spotify, users have access to playlists composed only with Christmas songs. As well as platforms like Netflix, which produce films designed for the Christmas season to entertain all users. Thus, Christmas turns out to be a time when artists can work to achieve success.

For Christmas music listeners like André Pereira, a student at the University of Coimbra, the sense of nostalgia that the songs convey stands out. Many of the songs take him back to childhood. Daniela Cirne, also a student, says that certain songs take her back in time, when Christmas was an even more magical time, as she still believed that Santa Claus would leave the gifts at home after coming down the chimney of her house.

Iris Marçal told The Portugal News that she always has a Christmas playlist ready “with artists like Ariana Grande, Mariah Carey and Pentatonix”, as she feels that setting up the Christmas tree, or even cooking the traditional Christmas cakes, “is not as fun if a Christmas song is not playing in the background.”

Even though Christmas singles are released every year, there is a song that everyone knows and is always associated with Christmas. “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey is a song that divides opinions. According to critics, it is one of the best Christmas songs ever written. However, for many, the music written by the acclaimed Queen of Christmas is already tiring, because it has been played on radio stations and stores since 1994.

The song, which was released 26 yearsago, in 1994, for the first time, reached the first place in the Hot 100 on the Billboard charts, demonstrating the longevity of the song that returns every Christmas.

The singer has participated over the yearsin Christmas specials, 2020 was no exception in which, by Apple TV + production, the “Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special” was released, a short film in which the singer has the lead role. In addition to re-recording some songs from her Christmas albums, Mariah Carey invited artists such as Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson who, together, re-recorded an original song by Mariah Carey, released in 2010, “Oh Santa!”.

Michael Bublé is another of the big names associated with Christmas. The singer reached the top of the charts with his album “Christmas”, being one of the only singers to reach the amount of a billion streams on online platforms with an album dedicated to the festive season. The album released in 2011, composed of 15 tracks, already has seven platinum records. According to ABCNews, in 2019, the album reached 15 million sales globally, making it a worldwide success.

Christmas, in addition to being associated with family life, will also always be associated with his songs that describe the season in different ways, but always associated with a spirit of love and hope.

Love them or hate them, there is one thing for sure every year, it is almost impossible to avoid Christmas songs at this time of the year!
