Germany has recorded 214 deaths from covid-19 and 7,141 new contagions in the last 24 hours, the number of cases being the lowest since 20 October last year.

Over the last four days, figures for new cases in the country have dropped more than two-thirds since the 25,164 contagions reported last Thursday (the maximum occurred on December 18 with 33,777 infections in 24 hours.

The number of deaths by covid-19 has dropped four-fifths from the maximum of 1,244 deaths reported last Thursday.

In relation to fatalities, this is the lowest figure since last December 14th.

Experts warn that it is still too early to talk about a "trend change". Despite the values ??that were communicated today, the records on the first day of the week are always influenced by the smaller number of medical tests that are always less during the weekends, just as not all regional health departments communicate the latest values ??in time.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet Tuesday with regional leaders, a week ahead of schedule, to analyze the pandemic's progress and decide whether further restrictions are needed. The federal government and state authorities have already indicated that it will be decided, or not, to prolong the restrictions that are in force.

Since last November, all entertainment, cultural and restaurant venues have been closed. In teaching, face-to-face classes were suspended in mid-December, a situation that should continue until the beginning of February.

Last week, new restrictions on mobility were applied, within a radius of 15 kilometers from each location, in districts where the weekly incidence is 200 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Among the new measures under study is the possible mandatory use of FFP2 sanitary masks in public transport and commercial establishments or more restrictions on mobility in the areas that are most affected.
