Portugal has dropped in categories in the Democracy Index compiled annually by The Economist magazine, ceasing to be a “fully democratic country”, to being back in the category of a “flawed democracy”. The 2020 report released today by The Economist IntelligenceCovid-19 restrictions and a reduction of parliamentary debates were, in Portugal’s case, among the main reasons for the change Unit, titled “In health and Sickness?” puts Portugal and France on the same level: both had previously climbed into the “fully democratic country” category and both now dropped out of it, being the only countries in Western Europe to do so.
