Despite the cancellation of the Loulé Carnival along the lines that it usually takes place, there will be online events to celebrate.

“We are living in difficult times when a pandemic is affecting millions of families around the world, and it would be impossible to host a Carnival as we know it, with the gathering of the public. But we are aware of the importance of this party for the Loulé residents and we could not fail to do something and bring a little of the spirit of Loulé Carnival to all who are currently in lockdown.”

The main initiatives proposed by the Municipality will take place online, allowing everyone to follow this programme in the safety and comfort of their homes, without jeopardising compliance with the rules implemented as part of the state of emergency.

Between 14 and 16 February, a virtual exhibition with images from old editions of the parade will take place across social networks, namely Facebook and YouTube.

On 15 February, starting at 9:30 pm, it will be possible to attend an Online Carnival Ball. The traditional Gala Ball at “Palácio” do Nera is this year replaced by a streaming ball, through the Facebook of the Municipality of Loulé. From the Solar da Música Nova Auditorium, the Fora d´Horas Orchestra will come to the homes of people around the world.

Although Avenida José da Costa Mealha, known as the “Loulé’s samba avenue”, does not host the three days of carnival parade this year, the Municipality of Loulé will place some decorative notes alluding to Carnival in this area for local residents to enjoy, as well as in other area in the centre of the city, remembering that, despite the circumstances of the pandemic.

First held in 1906, the Loulé Carnival is a cultural reference for the people of Loulé, but also a major tourist draw for the region and the main event held in the Algarve during the low season.
