The Ricardo Jorge National Institute of Health (INSA) has revealed that the coronavirus variant originating in the United Kingdom was detected in 58% of the samples analysed in Portugal in February.

The INSA also considers that the variants from South Africa and Brazil have a low circulation in Portugal.

Since April last year, INSA has been studying, in collaboration with the Gulbenkian Institute of Science (IGC), the genetic diversity of the new coronavirus with the main objective of determining its mutation profiles, which allows identifying the chains of transmission and new introductions of the virus in Portugal.
