3.4-magnitude earthquake felt in Lisbon region

An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.4 on the Richter scale and an epicentre eight kilometres east of Loures was felt at 9:51am in the Lisbon region, according to the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

The Portuguese Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (IPM) said in a statement that it had no records of any incidents associated with the earthquake.

The Lusa agency received reports that the quake was felt in several municipalities of Greater Lisbon, such as Lisbon, Loures, Odivelas, Cascais, Amadora and Sintra.

The earthquakes are classified according to their magnitude as micro (less than 2.0), very small (2.0-2.9), small (3.0-3.9), mild (4.0-4.9), moderate (5.0-5.9), strong (6.0-6.9), large (7.0-7.9), important (8.0-8.9), exceptional (9.0-9.9) and extreme (greater than 10).
