GNR detains suspected drug trafficker

A 64-year-old man has been detained by the GNR on Estrada Nacional (EN) 260, near Beja, on suspicion of drug trafficking, with the police seizing nearly 900 doses of hashish.

In a statement sent to the Lusa News Agency, the Beja Territorial Command of GNR indicated that the suspect was arrested on Tuesday, 23 March during a road inspection operation on the EN 260, near the town of Nossa Senhora das Neves.

According to GNR, during the operation, the police belonging to the Beja Territorial Post, approached the vehicle driven by the suspect, as the vehicle is allegedly related to other crimes.

After the man manifested "suspicious behaviour", GNR officers searched the vehicle and seized 892 doses of hashish, the vehicle, a cell phone, a bladed weapon and 575 Euros in cash, the GNR said in the statement.

The suspect, already with a criminal record for domestic violence and drug trafficking, will be present at the Judicial Court of Beja for first judicial interrogation and application of possible coercion measures.
