Melanie Baker was born and raised in Darfield (a small village in South Yorkshire) but now lives in Vale da Telha near Aljezur. This is her first book, written after being inspired by her grandson Jacob during the Covid lockdown.

Through the authors eyes we get a glimpse into how she cares for patients with mental health issues. With more than 20 years experience we are fortunate to get a glimpse in to what she learns from being in their lives and how she uses these skills to enrich her own life.

The insights we learn from her stories and patients show what a tough but rewarding job this is. Melanie is able to put herself in her patients shoes and that is where her great skill in empathy shines through, being able to see their needs and concerns.

This is a must read for anyone considering working as a mental health nurse. Understanding that the work may be fulfilling but it will no doubt affect your personal life as well as professional is important information to take away after reading this book.

This is a heartwarming and powerful book and you can’t help but be affected after reading it. I look forward to reading Melanie’s next book.
