The national transmissibility index (Rt) of the new coronavirus in Portugal today rose to 1.01 and the national incidence has increased to 64.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days, according to official data.

The previous national Rt, released on Monday, was 0.98. As for the same indicator only for the continent, it rose from 1 to 1.02, according to the joint bulletin from the Directorate-General for Health and the National Institute of Health Doutor Ricardo Jorge (INSA).

Regarding the national incidence, it had dropped from 62.9 to 60.9 last Monday, but today it has increased to 64.3.

On the continent, the incidence was also decreasing, standing on Monday at 60.9 cases, but today there is an increase to 62.5.

The transmissibility index of SARS-CoV-2 has been increasing since mid-February, being higher in the Algarve region, where it is at 1.19, according to the first monitoring report of the “red lines” released on Friday.

On March 11, at the presentation of the easing of lockdown plan, the Prime Minister, António Costa, warned that the reopening measures will be revised whenever Portugal exceeds the “120 new cases per day per 100 thousand inhabitants in 14 days” or whenever o Rt - the average number of secondary cases that result from a case infected by the virus - exceeds 1.

The ten municipalities in the country with the highest incidence of cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days are Machico (500), Moura (474), Rio Maior (334), Odemira (316), Portimão (308), Carregal do Sal (302) , Ribeira de Pena (283), Ribeira Brava (225), Vila do Bispo (213) and Marinha Grande (203).

In Portugal, 1,907,188 doses of vaccine against covid-19 have already been administered, 1,346,317 first doses and 560,871 second doses.

So... are we going to wait until a bunch of people die, ICUs fill up, Germany sends their army to help us, and THEN we will go back to lockdown??? I think even children know by now that any Rt above 1 means exponential growth. It's a ticking bomb. Why are we carrying on as if nothing is wrong? Any extra day spent in limbo means more people will die of covid. It could be you.
