The death recorded in the last 24 hours occurred in the North region.

According to the DGS epidemiological bulletin, 71 patients are currently hospitalised in intensive care, two less than on Monday.

With regard to hospitalisations in wards, official data indicate that 257 patients are hospitalised today, 20 less, a figure only comparable with that recorded at the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020.

On 25 March 2020, for example, Portugal had 276 people hospitalised with Covid-19.

Since the start of the pandemic Portugal has already counted 840,008 confirmed cases and 16,994 deaths.

Regarding the number of new cases, today's figures are similar to those recorded in recent weeks, with daily fluctuations.

There are 21,708 active cases, 394 fewer than on Monday, and the number of contacts under surveillance by the health authorities has dropped by 1,375, now totalling 19,699.

The data also reveals that 661 people have been reported recovered, bringing the total number since the start of the pandemic in Portugal in March 2020 to 801,306.

DGS data indicates that Portugal has 3,962,598 people vaccinated against Covid-19, of which 1,088,954 are already immunised with both doses.

The transmissibility index (Rt) of the SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus in Portugal is 0.92 while the incidence of infection per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days is 53.8.

Rt and incidence data are updated on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

In the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, 84 new infections have been reported, with 317,353 cases and 7,202 deaths counted so far.

The North region now has 88 new SARS-CoV-2 infections, totalling 337,541 cases of infection and 5,346 deaths since the pandemic began.

In the Centre region, 27 more cases have been reported, bringing the total to 119,083 infections and 3,016 deaths.

In the Alentejo 12 more cases were reported, totalling 29,880 infections and 971 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

In the Algarve region, today's bulletin reveals that 15 cases have been registered, accumulating 21,863 infections and 360 deaths.

The Autonomous Region of Madeira has recorded 16 new cases, accounting for 9,355 infections and 68 deaths due to covid-19 since March 2020.

The Azores now has 26 new cases and has counted 4,933 cases and 31 deaths since the start of the pandemic, according to the DGS.

The regional authorities of the Azores and Madeira release their data daily, which may not coincide with the information released in the DGS bulletin.

The new coronavirus has already infected at least 381,302 men and 458,370 women in Portugal, DGS data show, according to which there are 336 cases of unknown gender, which are under investigation, as this information is not provided automatically.

Of the total number of fatalities, 8,926 were men and 8,068 women.

The highest number of deaths continues to be concentrated in the elderly over 80 years old, followed by the age group between 70 and 79 years old.

Of the total deaths, 11,177 were people aged over 80, 3,620 were aged between 70 and 79, and 1,525 were aged between 60 and 69.

The pandemic caused at least 3,306,037 deaths worldwide, resulting from more than 158.8 million cases of infection, according to a report by the French agency AFP.
