The latest report from the DGAV - General Directorate of Food and Veterinary, shows data related to work carried out by the municipalities in 2020 with regard to animal welfare.

Olhão appears in 2nd position in the Algarve region with regard to sterilisations, with 496 animals sterilised last year. At the national level, the Municipality of Olhão occupies the 13th position.

A spokesman from the municipality said: “This is a value that is of particular importance, since the number of sterilisations performed is directly reflected in the decrease in the number of abandoned and stray animals.

“Although we live in a pandemic context, the number of animals sterilised by the municipal kennel and cattery of Olhão in 2020 represents an increase of 127 percent in relation to the previous year, which reflects the effort made by the municipality with regard to the well-being of animals.”

Meanwhile, the construction of the new Animal Collection Centre in the Municipality of Olhão is due to begin shortly. The contract to start the work, representing an investment of more than €1.1 million, was signed in April, and the construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.
