Portugal has recorded progress in most indicators associated with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), revealed the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

All objectives, except for 14 (conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas and marine resources) showed favourable evolutions or reached the target in 50 percent or more of the different indicators considered for evaluation, comparing the most recent year with the first year available.

At stake are 17 goals and 169 targets, established in the UN agenda, including social, economic and environmental concerns.

The main goal is to eradicate poverty, in all its forms, everywhere. In Portugal, the risk of poverty affected around 1.7 million people in 2019.

“In Portugal, 16.2 percent of people were at risk of poverty in 2019, 1 percentage point (pp) less than in 2018 and 3.3 pp less than in 2013 and 2014”, according to the document published by INE.

“Comparing the most recent year with the first available year, it is possible to conclude that the majority (90) of the indicators analyzed in this publication registered a positive evolution, 31 presented an unfavourable evolution and seven registered no changes”, states INE.

Based on the information for the last year available (2020), it appears that in objective 8 (promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all) the number of indicators with unfavourable evolution exceeded or equalled those that registered a favourable evolution, as happened with objective 14 (conservation of the oceans).

In 10 objectives, 50 percent or more of the indicators showed a favourable evolution. Among these goals are the eradication of poverty (1) and access to inclusive education (4).
