The 52-year-old coach, who was the national champion with Oliveirense in 2017/18 and 2018/19 campaigns, was introduced in the press room of Estádio da Luz and explained that he returned to Benfica to make history.
“I return 15 years later to a very different club, but I also return a different person, with much more experience. I don’t come to settle accounts… I have come to build history. The coaching team has worked a lot in the last few weeks, with well-defined objectives of what we want”, said Norberto Alves.
Benfica last won the national championship in 2016/17 and, last season, finished fourth, and then was eliminated in the semi-finals of the play-offs by Sporting, who then went on to win the title.
In addition to the two titles with Oliveirense, Norberto Alves also won an African Champions Cup, with Recreativo do Libolo, from Angola, the club he led between 2014 and 2016. The coach also had two spells at Académica.
In the introduction of the new coach, Benfica’s vice president for sports explained that the squad lineup for next season is already set.
“The squad [lineup] is closed. I would like to reassure the Benfica fans in this regard. At the right time, we will communicate with all the players that make up the squad”, said Fernando Tavares.
The Benfica basketball team’s training camp starts on August 9, after the usual medical examinations have been carried out.
